And not only was the cake a damn good looking cake, it was delicious too, and Tim Hallinan was even more interesting, personable and funny than he is on line. It's an interesting thing to "meet" someone face to face when you feel like you know him already -- it certainly saves on the getting to know you small talk. Here's Tim with the cake and here is his post on the signing.
Murder by the Book in Denver is the kind of place I'd love have a signing -- er, um, I mean if I published a book and they invited me.
Here's Lauri, owner of Murder by the Book with the cake and Tim with the actual book:
After the signing, I got Tim, Karen and Scott -- three of my very favorite people -- to hold still for a photo outside Murder by the book.
Okay and of course I had to have a picture too:
After the signing, Tim allowed Scott and I to spirit him away for dinner and we had a great time talking about everything from art forgery to plein air painting to travel, great books, ghosts, religion, the creative process and of course -- writing.
I'm so glad Tim was here to promote The Fourth Watcher. Luckily, he's a fast writer and the next novel of Bangkok, Misdirection should be published sometime in 2009. With a little luck, we'll talk him into coming back to Denver again.
Later this week, I hope to post about the books I read in July. I also hope to capture a few thoughts about my recent self-imposed exile from the internet and how that's working for me.

Looks like fun was had by all! Looking forward to reading about your I-break. :)
Cool! I love that cake. Wish I'd been there to get a piece.
Those pictures say it all, Lisa! It really was a fun event. I told Tim next time he's in town I'll definitely join you guys for dinner! K.
cake!
as usual, you have all the fun.
Murder By The Book. Officially the coolest name for a bookshop. Ever.
Glad you had such a great time.
Everyone looks so happy, Lisa. Thanks for sharing and spreading the joy and Tim's book!
Julie, It was a whole lot of fun, and it was interesting and it was delicious too!
Charles, It was like a poppy seed almond flavor and it was gooood. I know you would have had a good time.
Karen, I had forgotten how loud Tamayo can be, but the food and the conversation were fantastic!
Patti, Of all people to have cake envy...now I know you had a whole giant wedding cake to scarf down...did you save me a piece?
Orchid Hunter, They even have a "chalk outline" (in paint of course) of a body on the sidewalk in front. Even cooler, huh?
Shauna, I wish you could have been there. I know you would have loved talking to Tim too.
Larramie, Yeah -- we do look happy, don't we? It was a blast.
Aww, cool!
nice piece of cake/writing.
Looking forward to comparing notes with you on the pros (cons?) of a blog hiatus.
I'm still mostly out of the virtual world, but I'm happy to read about Tim's visit to Denver. I don't know whether he'll make an appearance in the Midwest. Sadly, I'd probably miss it because of work, as I had to miss Patry's Chicago appearance.
The cake was amazing.
The cake was amazing, but not as amazing as meeting you and Scott (and Karen) and then getting taken to dinner, which I wasn't even allowed to pay for.
I'd love to work out a return trip when there's a little more time. It would be very cool to start talking a little earlier and in a quieter place (the food was sensational, so that's not a complaint) and just let the time stretch out.
Thanks for everything.
Steve, I thought you might appreciate the artfulness of the cake.
Denis, It was fun.
JD, I don't think there will really be any cons and I haven't managed to kick the habit entirely, but pulling back from the internet itself has been very beneficial already. I'll post about it this week.
Steve, One of these days each of us will materialize in corporeal form to the other :)
Tim, Yes! Well now that we all know each other as real live people, you ought to come out and we can all just hang out at our humble abode. You are welcome (as is Munyin) anytime!
